As children, we naturally seem to recognize our full potential. We spend countless hours imagining we’re superheroes saving the world and our loved ones from danger. When we’re not doing that we’re thinking about growing up and becoming doctors, astronauts and rich business owners.
And then something happens. We get older and stop dreaming BIG. It feels more comfortable and safer to think and live small, and so we get into the habit of doing just that.
Why does this happen to so many of us? How do we go from feeling absolutely invincible to feeling small and powerless?
Fear and Doubt – Public Enemies Number 1 & 2
As we get older we stop creating our perfect world in our imaginations and start paying more attention to the “real” world right outside our eyes. We see our parents and the parents of our friends living with fear and doubt and feeling miserable because of it. We see so many grownups living this way, we start to believe that THAT is what life is about. THAT is as good as it’s going to get.
As we become adults, some of us might still believe that life can be great, but we sort of hope and wait for that greatness to come to us. We treat our lives like the weather, as if we have no control over whether we get sun or storms. We neglect to consider that perhaps we have the power to create that greatness as we believed we did when we were kids.
It’s time to take back your power and create the life you have always wanted. Don’t put it off – here are 5 steps to create the life you want now:
Step 1. Be 100% Accountable
If you want to create the life you want, you’ve got to take 100% responsibility for the life you have now. Blame never leads to success but personal accountability does. Recognize that the life you lead now was created by choices you have made. The life you want is yours to have, but only YOU can go and get it.
Step 2. Use Your Imagination
“Imagination and faith are the secrets of creation.”
― Neville Goddard
It’s time to dig your imagination out from the back of the closet, dust it off and start using it again. Imagine your ideal life. What kind of work do you do? How much do you earn a year? What kind of lifestyle do you have? Be specific and see it in your head. Spend time each day imagining yourself already living the life you want. Don’t focus so much on your life now, imagine your ideal life already happening. This is how you begin to create the life you want.
Step 3. Make a Plan & Take Action
Once you have taken responsibility for your current life and imagined how your ideal life looks, it’s time to get down to business. You’ll need to create a path to get to your goal. Is your goal to start a new business? Sit down and create that business plan. Do you want to lose weight and be healthier? Write down the steps you will take to get there.
No matter what your ultimate goal is, don’t just begin chasing after it. Create a realistic plan and timeline of how you’ll get to that goal and when you will hit certain milestones.
Step 4. Don’t Settle
Creating your ideal life will not be easy and it won’t happen overnight. If it were that simple and fast everyone would be living fantastic lives. Just stay focused and don’t settle for less than your ideal. If you want to start your business, don’t settle for getting a promotion at your current job. If you want to lose 30 pounds, don’t settle for 5.
Know in your heart that you DESERVE the life you want and do whatever it takes to get it.
Step 5. Don’t Listen to Others
You know the old saying, “Misery loves company.” It is so true! There will be people in your life that don’t understand or like your sudden quest for greatness. Deep down they know they are not living greatly and they may not want you to either. Ignore these people and stay focused on your dream. Spend time in your imagination every day and feel how it feels when you are living that dream.
You have the power to create the life you want. This isn’t just some new age, feel-good concept. It’s reality. There is nothing stopping you from greatness except you. So get out of your own way and go get the life you deserve.
